LAS NUEVAS ALAS DE HOLLYWOOD

En 1929 Wings se erigió como la mejor película del año, unas alas en la etapa silente que se convirtieron en la primera película muda que conseguía la preciada estatuilla. Pero ya no la última. De Francia vino, como el propio invento cinematográfico, la película que rompió la tradición, y es que en pleno 2012 un filme en blanco y negro, extranjero y además mudo ha conseguido lo que nadie había logrado hasta el momento: devolver a Hollywood su espíritu primigenio. Con The Artist (Mejor Película, Mejor Director -Michel Hazanavicius-, Mejor Actor, Mejor Banda Sonora), la Academia se desmarca para dar valor a una producción rompedora y chocante, con trazas de convertirse en la primera obra de arte del siglo XXI.

Por lo demás, y a pesar de lo cansino de una ceremonia que se podía predecir con meses de antelación, destacó el emocionado y donairoso discurso de la nueva reina L.A., Meryl Streep, que con su tercer Oscar a Mejor Actriz supo hacer honor a su notoriedad demostrando quién es la auténtica dama de hierro. Lástima que en el camino quedase la poco ponderada Glenn Close, otra grande de la escena a la que todavía no han decidido recompensar los académicos.

Muchas caras nuevas y sobrado estilismo, aunque no tanto glamour, la performance inicial de Billy Crystal volvió a suscitar las simpatías de quienes saben que es el mejor maestro de ceremonias para los Oscar, aunque su expresión sea tan inquietante como la insignia con el número “6” que llevaba en su chaqué Tom Hanks.
George Clooney y Brad Pitt, duchos ya en poner buena cara al mal tiempo, supieron dar su mejor sonrisa ante el triunfo de Jean Dujardin en su previsible reconocimiento, sin olvidar, cómo no, lo meritorios que fueron los Oscar de Octavia Spencer y el gran Christopher Plummer.

España no se va con las manos vacías aunque Fernando Trueba y Alberto Iglesias no consiguieran el galardón al que cada uno estaba nominado; por fortuna Woody Allen, invicto en su género, supo hacerse con el galardón al Mejor Guión original por Midnight in Paris, una película muy suya que, por cierto, también es algo nuestra.

En definitiva, una gala previsible, alargada innecesariamente, con reminiscencias al cine de siempre y llena de nuevas promesas que, no obstante, no parecen resplandecer como las figuras ya consagradas. Les queda un largo camino todavía, pero The Artist ha abierto la senda para darle a las generaciones venideras la esperanza de unas alas nuevas.

HOLLYWOOD NEW WINGS

In 1929 Wings rose as the Best Film of the year, a pair of wings that turned into the first silent movie which achieved the precious statuette. It was the first, but not the last. From France came, as the cinematographically invent itself, the motion picture which broke the tradition; because in the middle of 2012 a foreign-silent-black & white film has attained what no one had ever done before: giving Hollywood back its underlying spirit. With The Artist (Best Movie, Best Director -Michel Hazanavicius-, Best Actor, Best Soundtrack), the Academy distance itself from the past, assessing a shocking and superb production that looks as if it is going to be converted into the first masterpiece of the 21st Century.

Apart from that, and despite the weary and predictable list of winners, the ceremony was remarkable for the moving and graceful speech of the new L.A. Queen, Meryl Streep, who proves with her third Oscar why is she an authentically iron woman. However, it was a misfortune that Glenn Close, a magnificent and lowly praised actress, could not have been recompensed for her wonderful performances.

A lot of new faces with more than enough style –but not excessively glamorous-, came before the initial speech of Billy Crystal, who aroused the sympathy of those who knows that he is the best presenter of the Oscar, even when his expression was as worrying as the “6” badge on Tom Hanks suit. George Clooney and Brad Pitt, experienced in pulling their best face, brought us a superlative smile before the expected and deserved triumph of Jean Dujardin. We cannot forget, of course, the meritorious Oscar for Octavia Spencer and the immense Christopher Plummer.

Spain representatives do not return with empty hands, even when Fernando Trueba and Alberto Iglesias could not attain their respective Oscars; fortunately Woody Allen, unconquered in his kind, knew how to achieve the award for the Best Original Script for Midnight in Paris, a film typical of him but also slightly ours.

Once and for all, a predictable gala, unnecessarily spun out, but that reminds us the classical movies and full of new bright young hopes that, nevertheless, do not shine as the acclaimed stars. They have a long way yet but The Artist has opened up a path for the future generations: the wish of a new pair of wings to get to the top.

EL REY CORONADO

Pocas veces ha sido más previsible el palmarés de una Gala como los Oscar, tan dada a sorprender a última hora con sus galardones a los más inhóspitos proyectos. En esta ocasión las estatuillas hubieran podido ser entregadas con los títulos y nombres grabados en ellas, puesto que exigua sorpresa nos han entregado los tercos sobres dorados, testarudos en su intención de evitar ser abiertos a toda costa. Caras largas las justas, y sí profusa sonrisa artificial, grandes interpretaciones de júbilo y mucho glamour, marca de la casa esperable y nada decepcionante. La gran favorita de la noche, El discurso del rey, se alzó con los galardones más suculentos, incluidos el de Mejor Película, Mejor director, Mejor actor principal y Guión Original. Christian Bale arrebató finalmente el Oscar a Mejor Actor de reparto al camaleónico Geoffrey Rush, quien hubo de conformarse con ver desde la platea el éxito de su completo equipo, siendo quizá la gran decepción de la noche, con la venia de Valor de ley, cinta de los Coen que regresó al lejano Oeste sin ninguna de las diez estatuillas a que estaba nominada.

La red social apuntó maneras desde el comienzo de la Gala, alzándose con tres galardones, los de Guión Adaptado, Montaje y Banda Sonora Original, despojando de gran parte del palmarés a Origen, ganadora de los más importantes premios técnicos (Dirección fotográfica, Sonido, Montaje de sonido y Efectos especiales), y a Cisne negro, filme que únicamente obtuvo la esperable y merecida estatuilla para Natalie Portman. El toque inesperado sin duda corrió a cargo de Melissa Leo, Oscar a la Mejor actriz de reparto por The Fighter, cuando un nada espontáneo “fucking” fue pronunciado ante la atenta mirada del octogenario Kirk Douglas, para risión del completo aforo del Kodak Theatre.

Dirigida por Bruce Cohen y conducida por Anne Hathaway y James Franco, debemos parte de su gracejo a la energía de Hathaway, puesto que la desidia y sequedad de Franco resultaron del todo inapropiadas, habiendo sido adecuado sustituir sus desganadas presentaciones por las de cualquier otro maestro de ceremonias más oportuno. Aunque la Gala adoleciera de puntos de ingravidez imperdonables, reconocemos su talento en determinados instantes, siendo llamativos detalles como el anillo esplendoroso que lució Tom Hanks, la aportación de la ya famosa abuela de James Franco, el traje blanco de Bardem, el discurso de David Seidler (guionista de El discurso del rey), o el de Charles Ferguson y de Audrey Marrs (documental Inside Job), denunciando la crisis económica global y sus infranqueables culpables. Tampoco debemos olvidar el homenaje a Lena Horn, la profusión de vestidos de corte Salomé, la aportación de Obama, el canturreo de Kevin Spacey, la presentación de Oprah, la broma de Jude Law a Downey Jr. o la única actuación musical digna de mención: el remix en versión rap de Harry Potter, Toy Story 3, La red social y la última cinta de la saga Crepúsculo.

En definitiva, una gala esperable, con bellezas espectaculares como la de Penélope Cruz y el malogrado Oscar para Javier Bardem por Biutiful (más doloroso que el hecho de que no lo ganara es, indudablemente, que muchos compatriotas se alegren por ello), o los eternos discursos nominales de los galardonados. Una noche para disfrutar del cine y de sus protagonistas, al tiempo que de reconocer, pese a sus irregularidades, su exceso de guionización y sus cansancios, que nadie supera a los Oscar en espectacularidad y esmalte.

“Llegó el día”, así de contundente y reveladora se mostró Barbra Streisand, la actriz, cantante y realizadora que tuvo el honor de hacer historia otorgando el primer Óscar a la Mejor Dirección a una mujer, Kathryn Bigelow, por su celebrada En tierra hostil. Nerviosa e incrédula, la realizadora todavía se encontraba posando ante la prensa cuando recibió la noticia de que En tierra hostil había sido galardonada como Mejor Película del año, de entre un total de seis estatuillas.

Su máxima oponente, Avatar, hubo de conformarse con un segundo puesto, obteniendo tan sólo cuatro premios de los nueve a que estaba nominada. El público español, decepcionado en primera instancia por la ausencia de Óscar para Penélope Cruz y el cortometraje La dama y la muerte, pudo resarcirse con la obtención de la estatuilla para Juan José Campanella, realizador argentino autor de El Secreto de Sus Ojos, en coproducción con nuestro país.

Con un estilo monocorde, no exento de momentos cómicos de la mano de Steve Martin y Alec Baldwin como conductores de la gala, los resultados se acomodaron a las expectativas, con los Óscar a Mejor interpretación para Jeff Bridges por su actuación en Crazy Heart, así como para la actriz Sandra Bullock, por su papel en The Blind Side. Asimismo, como actores de reparto destacaron los esperables Mo´Nique (por Precious) y Christph Waltz (por Malditos Bastardos), a quienes pudimos ver profundamente emocionados por el galardón.

Repleto de estrellas de hoy y de siempre, como Lauren Bacall o Christopher Plummer, y recuperando elementos formales como “The winner is” en contraposición al políticamente correcto “And the Oscar goes to...”, esta octogésimo segunda edición de los Óscar sin duda marcará un antes y un después en la historia de la Academia Cinematográfica, un éxito para las igualdades que, tras tantos años de galardones y alfombra roja, ya iba siendo hora de conquistar.

Trece. Trece son los kilómetros que separan Alcobendas de Madrid, una pequeña localidad que sin duda ha dado, entre otras muchas veleidades, a una de las más famosas de este momento, Penélope Cruz, actriz española que la pasada madrugada se alzó con el Oscar a mejor actriz de reparto. Impecablemente vestida con un Pierre Balmain vintage, con una gran profesionalidad y haciendo alarde de su natural talante, la joven madrileña no dejó pasar el momento sin agradecer la ayuda de cuantos han aparecido en su carrera, con especial afecto a Woody Allen, Bigas Luna y Fernando Trueba, a quienes dice “llevar en el corazón”. En una gala marcada por el buen gusto, la sobriedad y polivalencia de Hugh Jackman (cada vez más exquisito) la obviedad en el reparto de premios y un decorado rememorador de los grandes musicales de Broadway, la indiscutible triunfadora de la noche fue Slumdog millionaire, de Danny Boyle, quien obtuvo ocho de las diez estatuillas a las que estaba nominada, incluyendo la de Mejor Película y Mejor Dirección. Con un merecido reconocimiento a Kate Winslet y a Sean Penn en las categorías de Mejor Actriz y Mejor Actor respectivamente, y un Oscar póstumo al ya legendario Heath Ledger como Mejor Actor de Reparto, la gala transcurrió sin grandes sorpresas, postergando, eso sí, a un segundo plano a El curioso caso de Benjamin Button, quien obtuvo tres de los trece Oscar a que estaba nominada. Así las cosas, la de esta noche ha sido una gala digna de recordar, marcada por la crisis, la multiculturalidad, los números musicales y la alta costura. Un 23-F que, gracias a nuestra gran actriz, no será sinónimo de siniestralidad. Desde Todos al cine, ¡enhorabuena Penélope Cruz!

LA NOCHE DE LOS OSCAR 2007

Puntuales a su cita, a las dos y media hora española dieron comienzo los Premios de la Academia Norteamericana de Cinematografía, unos Oscar con sabor latino que pronto hicieron las delicias de los seguidores patrios: con tres estatuillas ganadas, El laberinto del fauno –coproducción hispano-mexicana- consiguió desterrar el mal sabor de boca que dejó la ausencia de Oscar para nuestra Penélope Cruz en la categoría de “Mejor Actriz” –para la consabida reina de Helen Mirren-, y de cortometrajes, donde Das Leben der anderen se alzó con el preciado premio dejando a Pedro Almodóvar sin su esperado galardón.

Con un tono ligero y amenizado con el liviano humor de Helen Degeneres, la 79ª Edición de los Premios Oscar pasará a la historia por ser una de las más internacionales y sorprendentes de los últimos años, con una inesperada ganadora, Infiltrados, que no sólo consiguió el más que merecido Oscar al “Mejor Director”, Martin Scorsese –geniales Spielberg, Lucas y Coppola-, sino también, y contra todo pronóstico, a la “Mejor Película”, diluyendo las expectativas que a última hora se habían forjado en torno a la Pequeña Miss Sunshine.

Con Babel como gran perdedora de la noche, un aforo de más de 170 artistas consagrados y con una decepcionante ausencia de Oscar para el gran Peter O´Toole, nadie puede negarle a la noche por excelencia del cine mundial, su merecido reconocimiento. Un año más, no sólo nos ha traído buen cine sino, y sobre todo, un gran espectáculo.
